Bilonog strikes shot put gold
Ukraine's Yuriy Bilonog heaves his shot put in the rain in Munich
Bilonog's winning put was the best in the world this year
Ukraine's Yuriy Bilonog took the first field gold medal in Munich when he won the men's shot put.

Bilonog secured victory with a heave of 21.37m, the best in the world this year.

His performance saw him improve on his last appearance at a major meeting, after finishing sixth at last year's World Championships in Edmonton.

Bilonog managed 21cm further than the best effort of 21.16m by Denmark's Joachim Olsen, who took silver.

Germany's Ralf Bartels won bronze with a best of 20.58m, edging out Finland's Arsi Harju into fourth.

Bilonog's efforts were rather overshadowed as the shot put competition took place at the same time as Paula Radcliffe's record-breaking run in the women's 10,000m.
