Haile Gebrselassie & Helen Clitheroe win in Manchester

Gebrselassie wins Great Manchester Run

Haile Gebrselassie won his fourth Great Manchester 10km Run, while Britain's Helen Clitheroe set a personal best in triumphing in the women's race.

Ethiopia's Gebrselassie, 38, who beat Britain's Chris Thompson, said: "My big challenge right now is trying to be better than the youngsters."

He added he hoped to compete in the marathon in the London 2012 Olympics.

Clitheroe won in a time of 31min 45 secs, ahead of Christelle Daunay of France and Grace Momanyi of Kenya.

Thompson, 30, the 10,000m silver medallist at the European Athletics Championships last summer, finished 11 seconds behind Gebrselassie, who won in 28:10 and praised the Briton for mounting a challenge.

He said: "I didn't expect that from this boy. He ran so great."

Thompson pleased with second

Thompson said: "It's great for him to be humble enough to say he thought I pushed him.

"I felt the time wasn't amazing but I'm going to keep enjoying myself and I'm in races now. I've got to think of nothing other than racing these guys. It hurts like hell, but that's why I love it."

Clitheroe, 37, said: "I'm really pleased. I wanted to win with it being so close to home. I felt like I dominated the race but I kept thinking they're going to come flying past me. I felt strong although I'm surprised with the time in those conditions.

"I'm hoping to get selected for the European 10km challenge on the track in June. I just want do one on the track and see what happens but I'm focusing on 5,000m for rest of the summer."
