Charlotte Purdue takes victory in Antrim Cross Country

European junior champion Charlotte Purdue stars in the International Cross Country in County Antrim

Aldershot athlete Charlotte Purdue clinched an impressive victory at the Antrim IAAF Cross Country meeting in Northern Ireland.

Purdue battled with last year's world junior cross bronze medallist Esther Chemtai for most of the race.

Kenyan Chemtai had to settle for third after being passed by another Briton Louise Damen in the closing stages.

Last year's winner Mike Kigen won the men's race as African athletes filled the first six places.

Kigen won in 26 minutes and seven seconds which left him six seconds ahead of Titus Mbishei and Jacob Cheshari.

Another Kenyan Dennis Masai was fifth ahead of Ugandans Moses Kibet and Soyekwo Kibet while Andy Vernon was the leading Briton in seventh place.

Women's winner Purdue maintain her fine form as her triumph in the junior event at last month's European Cross Country Championships in Portugal.

Gladys Ganiel O'Neill was the leading Northern Ireland finisher after taking 10th in the women's event.
