Ciara Mageean continued her superb year by earning a runaway win in the junior women's race at the Woodie's DIY Irish Inter-Counties Cross Championship.

Mageean finished well clear of her training partner Emma Mitchell in Derry City with Laura Behan taking third.

The Gransha Park course was covered in snow but the athletes coped admirably.

Fionnuala Britton dominated the senior women's race with Kerry Harty fifth while Joe Sweeney and Shane Quinn took the senior and junior men's events.

Mageean's victory suggests that the World Junior Championships 1500m silver medallist is capable of challenging strongly at next month's European Cross Country Championships in Albufeira.

The Portaferry athlete will be joined in Portugal by Sunday's junior women's runner-up Mitchell who is also coached by Eamonn Christie.

Harty's fifth place may also be enough to earn the Newcastle athlete a trip to Portugal.

Britton finished ahead of Cork's Elizabetn Lee and Borriskane's Siobhan O'Doherty in the senior women's race while Dublin's Sweeney took a comfortable win in the men's event ahead of Mullingar's Mark Christie and Brendan O'Neill.

Quinn took the junior men's title won by Michael McKillop 12 months ago.

Waterford athlete Quinn finished ahead of Emmet Jennings and John Travers.

McKillop, who is no longer in the junior ranks, is currently in South Africa on a warm-weather training stint.

The first three in the men's and women's junior, Under 23 and Senior races were automatically selected for the European Cross Country Championships.

The remaining three athletes for each event will be named on Monday by Athletics Ireland's selection committee.
