Oxford-born athlete Mara Yamauchi has vowed to improve on her disappointing finish in the New York City marathon by qualifying for the London Olympics.

Yamauchi finished 13th in the New York City Marathon last Saturday in a time of two hours 31 minutes and 38 seconds.

"My best isn't behind me, my career isn't over and I can improve. I'll produce better performances leading up to 2012," she told BBC Oxford.

"I want to do a spring marathon to qualify for the Olympics in January."

But Yamauchi, who lives in Japan with her husband, admitted that her poor finish in New York has dented her confidence.

"It hasn't been a good year for me and it wasn't a great day in New York. But you pick yourself up and carry on.

"I've had a few niggles this year and I've got to sort them out but I do feel I'm getting well into my career now.

"I'm perhaps having more injuries but that's part of being an athlete and you have to just cope with it and get on with training.

"You've got to be in great shape to do well and I can improve by next year ready for qualification for 2012 and the World Championships in South Korea," she said.
