Nicola Sanders vows to rediscover her best form

Berkshire 400m runner Nicola Sanders has said she believes she can return to the form that saw her win World Championship silver in 2007.

With a season again blighted by injury, Sanders missed out on the individual 400m at the European Championships.

She told BBC Berkshire: "It's been a hard year. I've had injuries in the past but this has been more prolonged.

"It came so easily then [in 2007] but if I have a good spell leading into the season, I can get back to that level."

Sanders is currently at a warm-weather training camp in Portugal with the Great Britain squad and said it was going well for her.

"I haven't been running well recently, which is very frustrating. However, I thrive in the hot weather. I've been feeling a lot better in training, feeling a bit more confident.

I'm going to have a break, rehab all the injuries I've had and come back stronger next year

"My back issue is an ongoing problem but it's manageable and I'm confident that it will be fine. The Achilles problem that has stopped me recently has been feeling really good and I haven't felt it for a week or so now, so I think that has pretty much been dealt with.

"When I come back home after the Europeans, I'll do one more race at the Aviva Grand Prix and then I'm going to call it a day on this season.

"There's no point trying to do something when it's not going to happen, so I'm going to have a nice break, rehab all the injuries I've had and come back stronger next year."

Sanders will only run in the 4x400m relay at the European Championships in Barcelona but said she is coming to terms with the disappointment of missing the individual event.

"Since I got on to the team for the first time in Helsinki in 2005, I've always done an individual event as well as the relay, so I was upset but really I knew it was going to happen from the start of the season.

"I was more upset that I wasn't running well. I had to adjust my psyche and think I've just got to do my job for the team and that's what I'm doing now."
