Brave Radcliffe takes second

Radcliffe stayed with a top class field until the end
Britain's Paula Radcliffe produced a gutsy performance to come second in the fastest 5,000m of the year at the Norwich Union British Grand Prix.

The race was won by 21-year-old Ethiopian Ayelech Worku, who finished with a British all-comers' record of 14 minutes 41.23 seconds.

But Ireland's Sonia O'Sullivan, who had looked in good form coming into the race, finished a desperately disappointing ninth.

Radcliffe finished in 14.44.46, just one second off her own British record in only her second race of the year.

O'Sullivan was off the pace by the end
She has been forced to miss about 13 weeks of action because of a knee injury and a bout of bronchitis and seemed to be struggling with the early pace.

With about six laps to go, Worku and Kenyans Lydia Cheromei and this year's London Marathon winner Tegla Laroupe broke away from the field.

It looked as if Radcliffe would be left behind, but she clawed her way back with three laps to go and actually led the race.

The four athletes were still together going into the last lap, but on the straight Worku produced a devastating sprint finish to come in first, with Radcliffe second and Laroupe third.

After the race, a delighted Radcliffe said: "I must have missed about 13 weeks with the injury and I had bronchitis.

"I did not know what to expect today and my confidence was a bit low.

"I am really lucky the Olympics are so late this year. Now I have got to get my head down and work and hope that race goes as well as this one."
