Ethiopian Haile Gebrselassie targets world record

Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie has not ruled out a world record attempt when he competes in the 10km Great Manchester Run on Sunday, 16 May.

The 36-year-old, who won the race last year and in 2005, insists the flatness of the city-centre course makes it an ideal route to achieve the feat.

He was on schedule to beat Micah Kogo's world record of 27 minutes, one second in 2009 but slowed in a headwind.

He said: "I want to produce something special when trying for a third win."

Gebrselassie blasted through the first 5km in 13:31 last year, but the conditions forced him to slow dramatically in the second half of the race and post a mark of 27:39.

"I have always stressed how important it is to have perfect weather conditions in record attempts - last year I was in perfect shape to do so but the wind made it an impossible task," said Gebrselassie.

"But Manchester is a very fast course and one which I like very much. I will come again open minded about what I can achieve - I never say 'yes' or 'no' about what times I can run."

The race is one of only three 10km races in the world to hold International Association of Athletics Federations gold label status and has already achieved a sell-out entry of 36,000 runners.
