Helsinki to host 2012 Europeans

Helsinki Olympic Stadium
The Helsinki Olympic Stadium hosted the Europeans in 1994 and 1971

Helsinki will host the European Athletics Championships for a third time in 2012 as the event switches to a two-year cycle.

They will take place from 27 June-1 July with the marathon and walking events dropped because of the close proximity to the 2012 Olympics.

However, with the London Games due to start on 27 July, leading athletes could opt not to compete in Helsinki.

A full championship programme will be held in non-Olympic years.
