Former triple jump world champion Jonathan Edwards says he is delighted at Phillips Idowu's triple jump gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Idowu's victory in Berlin makes him Britain's first male world champion since Edwards claimed gold in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 2001.

"For me there was nothing but undiluted joy for Phillips," said Edwards.

"He was obviously overwhelmed when he won gold and I felt a real sense of emotion for him."

Idowu, 30, set a new personal best of 17.73 metres to claim Britain's second gold of the World Championships in Berlin on Tuesday, adding to Jessica Ennis's heptathlon gold.

Edwards, also a former Olympic, Commonwealth and European champion, will present Idowu with his medal on Wednesday and was pleased to see his one-time rival fulfil his promise.

"I know how tough it has been for him the last few years," said Edwards.

"I competed against him many times towards the end of my career and the beginning of his career and he was always a fantastic competitor and would go on to do great things."

After being told of his status as Britain's first male gold medallist in eight years, the first since Edwards, Idowu jokingly said: "Yeah, I remember that guy, he was good in his day."

Edwards joined in the banter saying: "Good in his day? How cheeky can you get?"

Londoner Idowu, who is the defending Commonwealth Games and world indoor champion, beat his previous best of 17.68, set in 2002, although he has jumped 17.75 indoors.

In the process he also gained revenge over Nelson Evora, edging him into the silver medal position as the Portuguese had done to Idowu at last year's Olympic games in Beijing.

The victories of Idowu and Ennis means this is the first time since 1993 that Britain has won two golds at the same world championships.
