Five medals for Jersey athletes

Jersey's athletes won five medals to make the third day of the Island Games in Aland their most successful so far.

Katherine Rothwell, 16, picked up Jersey's first athletics gold in the shot putt with a throw of 11.15 metres.

This was followed by success on the track, as 18-year old Gemma Dawkins ran a stunning 400 metres race to take gold in a time of 54.72 seconds.

An ecstatic Dawkins told BBC Jersey: "I tried to pace myself in the first 200m and then hit it on the bend".

Jersey's Zane Duquemin made it three golds by winning the men's discus with a throw of 15.21 metres.

Three was a surprise second silver for Jersey's Peter Irving in the men's 110m hurdles as his time of 15.51 seconds was only beaten by Guernsey's Glenn Etherington.

Felicity Johnson-Deely clocked a time of 4.39.17 in the women's 1500m to win bronze and make it five medals for Jersey. The results were personal bests for all of Jersey's medal winners.
