Manx Harriers pick up six medals

Manx Harriers
Astin led the women's under 17 event from start to finish.

Manx Harriers won six medals at the Lancashire Cross Country Championships in Blackburn on Saturday.

Gemma Astin led the U17 women's event from start to finish to claim gold.

There was disappointment, however, for defending champion Keith Gerrard and the Manx Harriers men's team who narrowly missed out on gold medals.

The senior men's team brought home silver with Nigel Armstrong, Chris Quine and Andy Fox all winning bronze medals in their age groups.

Defending champion Gerrard, who recently finished seventh in the European Under-23 Championships, also claimed bronze.

Team manager Andy Fox told BBC Isle of Man: "The frozen ground was very treacherous and Keith couldn't risk running flat out on the frozen rutted downhill sections."

He added: "Despite getting 11 men in the top 31 in the county, we couldn't match Blackburn Harriers in the team event where the top six count."
