Olympic bronze medallist Meseret Defar outpaced her rivals to win the Women's 5km Challenge in London's Hyde Park.
The Ethiopian, who was third in the 5,000m in Beijing, clocked 15 mins 01 secs to cross the line first for the second year in a row.
Linet Masai of Kenya and Britain's Jo Pavey finished second and third.
"Since I got back from the Olympics I've had flu and missed a bit of training and I really wanted to get out here and race," said Pavey.
"I was worried because I wanted to put in a good performance but I wasn't sure how I'd feel. It was always going to be tough with those girls - they go out hard and finish fast."
Pavey crossed the line in 15 mins 32 secs, just one second behind Masai, the world junior 10,000m record holder.
Katrina Wootton was the next best Briton, taking fifth place in 16:11 in her 5km road race debut.
Earlier in the day, Kenya's Grace Momanyi made up for the disappointment of missing the Olympics by winning g the Great Yorkshire Run.
Less than 48 hours after competing at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Brussels, she covered the 10km distance in 32 mins 44 secs.
"The last couple of kilometres were tough and I could feel tiredness in my legs. It was a hard race and I'm please I won it comfortably and in a good time," she said.
Mustafa Mohamed of Sweden won the men's race in 29:10, six secs clear of former European 10,000m champion Chema Martinez and Collis Birmingham.
