Paul McKee produced a season's best for 400 metres in Saturday's international meeting in Madrid.
The Belfast runner clocked 46.55 as he won the B race at the 26th Meeting de Atletismo Madrid.
McKee's time cut .08 seconds off his season's best and was a considerable improvement on his disappointing run in Salamanca on Wednesday.
He will continue to chase the Olympic A standard of 45.55 at next Sunday's meeting in Lignano, Italy.
"It was a pity I wasn't in the A race," the former former world indoor bronze medallist told BBC Sport.
"I won the B race easily and while it was a bit windy from 200 to 300 metres, I pushed myself well in the home straight. I will now be hoping for a quick time in Lignano."
McKee finished ahead of Jon Soriano of the Dominican Republic who clocked 47.03.
Derval O'Rourke (13.18) finished third in the women's 100m hurdles in Madrid behind Spain's Josephine Onyia (12.94) and Yevgenina Snihur (13.17) of the Ukraine.
David Gillick was a late withdrawal from the 400m A race at the meeting.
