Lee McConnell celebrates in Osaka
Lee McConnell was on the third leg in Japan
Scotland's Lee McConnell won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Osaka as part of Great Britain's women's 4x400m relay team.

Along with Christine Ohuruogu, Marilyn Okoro and Nicola Sanders, they posted a national record in Japan.

McConnell told BBC Sport: "I'm extremely pleased. I'm pretty shocked but very happy."

The British team finished third behind the USA and Jamaica in a time of three minutes 20.04 seconds.

They had posted the fourth fastest time in the heats, but individual 400m gold medallist Ohuruogu came into the team at the expense of Donna Fraser.

Ohuruogu led off with a strong opening leg to hand Okoro a narrow lead.

But the USA's 200m winner, Allyson Felix, powered through the second leg to open up a comfortable cushion as Great Britain slipped down to fourth.

Great Britain remained fourth with McConnell running a strong third leg.

But their chances of a medal looked slim until individual silver medallist Sanders powered off the final bend to edge out Russia.

McConnell, the only Scottish woman to make the World Championship squad, had decided against competing in her preferred individual event, the 400m hurdles, to concentrate on the relay.
