Lyne and Farah enjoyed medal success at the Europeans
Mo Farah and Rebecca Lyne have been named the British Athletics Writers' Association's athletes of the year.

Somalian-born Farah, 23, who came to Britain 13 years ago, won European Championships 5,000m silver.

Lyne, 24, claimed a surprise 800m bronze medal at the championships in Gothenburg last August.

Sprinter Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, 18, retained his junior male athlete title, and middle distance prospect Sian Edwards, 17, was junior female winner.

Former world 5,000m record-holder David Moorcroft, shortly to retire as UK Athletics chief executive, won the Ron Pickering Award for his outstanding service to the sport.

Wheelchair athlete David Weir won the Norwich Union Award for the best performance in a British vest.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful year with gold medals in the 100m, 400m and 1500m and silver in the 200m at the IPC Athletics World Championships in Assen in September.

The London Marathon winner also broke world records in the T54 200m and 400m during the season and took gold in the 1500m event at the European Championships in Helsinki.
