Injured Zelezny will miss Worlds
Jan Zelezny
Jan Zelezny has won three Olympic gold medals
Former triple world and Olympic javelin champion Jan Zelezny will miss the World Athletics Championships in Helsinki because of a leg injury.

The 39-year-old world record holder said he aggravated an Achilles tendon injury at an event in Oslo on Friday, where he finished fifth.

Zelezny, whose world record stands at 98.48m, threw 82.70m in Oslo to end up well behind winner Tero Pitkamaki.

"The simple reason for the withdrawal is my health," he said.

"My main problem is the foot that was operated on. It doesn't hurt that much, but the qualification is followed immediately by the finals the next day.

"It's going to be an odd feeling to watch an event that theoretically I could be in."

The world championships start in Helsinki on Saturday 6 August.
