Heshko edges East in mile battle
Ivan Heshko
Heshko finished five metres clear
Ukraine's Ivan Heshko ran a perfectly-judged race to take the Great North Mile in Newcastle on Saturday.

Heshko timed his kick better than his rivals to beat Portugal's Rui Silva into second and Britain's fast-finishing Michael East into third.

World 1500m champion Tatyana Tomashova won the women's race with a strong finish from Britain's Helen Clitheroe.

East now turns his attention to next March's Commonwealth Games, where he is aiming to defend his 1500m title.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge broke away early to win the men's 3,000m.

Australia's Craig Mottram, the man who beat him to World 10,000m bronze in Helsinki last month, could not live with the pace and finished third, with Boniface Kiprop in second.

Uganda's world steeplechase champion Dorcus Inzikuru emphasised the scope of her talent by winning the women's 3,000m race from New Zealand's Kim Smith.
