Scotland's Kathy Butler retained her Norwich Union AAA 10,000m title in Watford on Saturday.

Butler put in a storming finish to stretch away from European cross-country champion Hayley Yelling.

Butler won in 31 minutes 46.53 seconds, while Yelling's time of 31:53.61 secured her a place in the England team for next year's Commonwealth Games.

In the men's race, Gavin Thompson beat Keith Cullen into second place to gain automatic selection for Melbourne.

Cullen looked favourite when he went into the last 200m with a four-second lead over Thompson.

But Thompson found an amazing finishing sprint and overtook Cullen in the last five metres to earn his first English senior gold medal.

Kenya's Barnabas Kosgei came home first in 28:33.74, ahead of Thomson in 28:40.58 and Cullen in 28:41.19.
