Berlin named host of 2009 Worlds

Paris hosted the 2003 Worlds

Berlin has been named as host of the 2009 World Athletics Championships.

The German capital beat bids by European rivals Valencia and Split in a vote at a meeting of the International Association of Athletics Federations.

Berlin had previously missed out in its attempt to host the 2005 Worlds, which were given to Helsinki in Finland.

Paris staged the last event in 2003 and is now bidding against London and other cities for the right to put on the 2012 Olympic Games.
