Bekele sets world record
Kenenisa Bekele
Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele produced a great finish to set a new world indoor record for the men's 5,000m at Friday's Norwich Union Grand Prix.

But Jason Gardener suffered a shock loss in the men's 60m, while Marion Jones was beaten in the women's event.

Kelly Holmes set a European record in the women's 1,000m, while Jo Pavey set the British women's 3,000m record.

Haile Gebrselassie lost in his final British indoor appearance, as team-mate Markos Geneti won the men's two miles.

In the scintillating men's 5,000m Ethiopian star Bekele clocked 12:49.60 to beat the previous time of 12:50.38 set by compatriot Haile Gebrselassie in Birmingham in February 1999.

Bekele, 21, the 2003 outdoor world 10,000m champion, became only the third man to break 13 minutes for the indoor 5,000m

"Today was very hard, it was a very difficult record to beat. Haile is my hero so it's special that the record was his," said Bekele.

The women's 60m saw American sprinter Jones suffer only her third defeat in nearly seven years as European Indoor champion Gevaert won in a national record of 7.13.

Jones, making her first European appearance since autumn 2002, clocked a season's best 7.16.

"I'm very happy with my start today, but this is a work in progress and by the time Athens comes around I'll be ready to run," she said.

An eventful women's 1,000m saw Holmes clash heels with training partner Maria Mutola before winning in a new European record time.

The Olympic and world 800m champion crashed to the floor after clipping Holmes with 200m to go.

"I'm pleased with the run but gutted that Maria fell. It would have been a good run-in as it's the first time I have been in front of her for a while," said Holmes, who clocked 2:32.96.

The men's two miles proved not to be the swansong Gebrselassie had hoped for on his final indoor appearance in Britiain.

The Ethiopian legend was on course to break his own world record at the halfway point, but faded towards the end.

Compatriot Markos Geneti won in 8:08.39.

The men's 60m saw disappointment for Britain's sprinters as Brian Lewis of the USA won the final in 6.59.

Pre-race favourite Gardener failed to qualify after making a rotten start in his heat, and Darren Campbell was disqualified for a false start in the final.

Mark Lewis-Francis qualified in an impressive 6.53, but could not repeat that form in the final where he finished fifth

The women's triple jump saw a thrilling finish as Ashia Hansen left it to the final round before taking victory.

The 32-year-old triumphed on the track where she won the world indoor title in March 2003 - her final jump of 14.47m enough to win after fouling her first three attempts.

"I have been in that situation before and just stayed calm. It's great to be competing and winning again," said the Birchfield athlete.

The women's 3,000m saw an upset as Meseret Defar of Ethiopia clocked 8:33.44 to beat compatriot Tirunesh Dibaba.

Pavey clocked 8:34.55 to beat Liz McColgan's 15-year-old British record with a gutsy display which saw her lead until the final 300m.

"I just can't believe it. To break a record Liz had, she was such a great athlete," said Pavey, who beat world record-holder Berhane Adere.

In the men's 200m, Christian Malcolm staked a powerful case for selection for the world indoor championship with an impressive win.

The Welshman overcame a slow start to clock 20.74 seconds and beat Dominic Demritte of the Bahamas.

The men's long jump saw US star Dwight Phillips edge out Britain's Chris Tomlinson.

Phillips jumped 7.91m in the first round, to oust Tomlinson who could only manage 7.72m.

A high-quality men's 1500m saw British champion Michael East smash his career best - but it was only enough to finish third.
