Pole vaulter faces fine
Tom Lobinger embarks on his celebration in Monaco

German pole vaulter Tim Lobinger could be in trouble with the athletics authorities after baring his backside at the World Athletics Final in Monaco.

After winning Saturday's event Lobinger pulled down his shorts and ran a lap of honour.

He claimed that it was a spontaneous protest against a number of new rules that have recently been introduced.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) said it would not allow the world indoor champion to escape unpunished.

"I imagine we will take away $5,000 from his 30,000 win bonus because you just cannot behave like that," said IAAF general secretary Istvan Gyulai.

An official from the German athletics federation said they were waiting for the IAAF report before deciding whether to impose their own sanctions.

"Such behaviour is not acceptable and not funny at all," said the official.

The federation's president, Clemens Prokop, added: "We'll make it clear to Tim that something like this cannot be tolerated.

"We all know Tim's showmanship qualities.

"But even with all the tension of such an important competition, something like that doesn't belong there.

"It's rude, unsportsmanlike behaviour."

Lobinger, 30, said: "I knew I was wearing underwear under my shorts, but it's not the sort of thing you plan to do in advance. Anyway, I found it quite funny."
