Jones gives birth to boy

Olympic champion Marion Jones and 100m world record holder Tim Montgomery have announced the birth of their son.

The baby boy, also called Tim, was born on Saturday at Duke University Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, weighing 5lb 14 ounces.

"I am so happy," Jones said in a statement. "This is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. He's a beautiful baby, and Tim and I could not be more excited."

The baby had not been due until next month so Montgomery, who was competing at the Norwich Union International meeting in Glasgow, was not present at the birth.

"We knew we'd have a fast baby, but I didn't expect him to be this fast," joked Montgomery, who set a new record of 9.78 seconds for the 100m last year.

"It was very stressful for me not to be right there with Marion. We just didn't think he'd come this soon. But I'm relieved to know they are both doing very well and I can't wait to see them."

Jones plans to return to the track in September to start training for next year's Olympics in Athens.

It is her first child while Montgomery already has a daughter, Tyhamia, born in 2001.
