East's form has not hit the heights this season and he failed to impress in Birmingham, being unable to qualify for the 1500m final.
He was hoping that to rise to the occasion as he did at the 2002 Commonwealth Games where he took everyone by surprise to land gold in the 1500m.
The Reading runner fed off the home support and finished, with a surging sprint, in a time of 3:37.35.
Running indoors last year, when he won European Indoor bronze, provided East with the perfect platform to achieve bigger and better things in the summer.
This year he has mixed his schedule between indoor events and cross-country in an effort to match those achievements later in the year.
But he was unable to match expectations after his efforts in Manchester.
