Chambers denied double chance

Dwain Chambers will not get the chance to land a sprint double at the European Championships next month after missing out on the third 200m place in the British team.

Selectors have also left Janine Whitlock out of the squad after the pole vaulter tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug.

In some events all three of the selected athletes have the ability to win medals
Performance director Max Jones

"Janine Whitlock is not selected at this stage pending the decision of the independent drug advisory officer as to whether there is a case to answer," said UK Athletics.

Chambers had hoped to double up in the sprint as the championships which take place in Munich from 6-11 August.

But he performed badly in the 200m at Sunday's trials in Birmingham, prompting selectors to hand the discretionary spot to Christian Malcolm, who finished third behind Marlon Devonish and Darren Campbell.

Campbell wil have the opportunity to double up for the championships however while Chambers must settle for just the 100m.

Jason Gardener, who finished third in Birmingham, misses out in the individual event, but is included in the 4x100m relay squad.

The British selectors will announce any additions to the current 58 competitors on Tuesday, July 23, should other athletes get close to the UK Athletics-imposed qualifying times over the next week.

Presently there are no entrants for the men's 1500m or the women's 100m.

Holmes will double up in the 800m and 1500m

Kelly Holmes will double up in the women's 800m and 1500m, while Paula Radcliffe will compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m.

UK Athletics performance director Max Jones is optimistic of success despite the close proximity of the Commonwealth Games, which finish on 4 August, two days before the Europeans.

"I am looking forward to the twin challenges of Manchester and Munich and believe that there will be many opportunities for outstanding performances," he said.
