Coe accepts IAAF nomination
Coe is one of the greatest-ever middle-distance runners
Sebastian Coe has been nominated by UK Athletics to stand for election to the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) council.
The double Olympic 1,500m champion has been nominated for the post following Robert Stinson's decision to retire as IAAF honorary treasurer in August 2003. That could leave Britain without a council representative. "I am honoured that UK Athletics has nominated me to stand for election to the IAAF council," said Coe. Important role "The work will not only be enjoyable but also a challenge. "Athletics stands at a crossroads. "Only a strong international governing body, together with the innovative work of individual federations and meet promoters, will guarantee its presence as one of the most popular sports in the world. "I look forward to representing the interests of UK Athletics at this level." Coe won gold medals in the 1,500m at the 1980 and 1984 Olympics in Moscow and Los Angeles. He also won silver in the 800m at both games and set world records in the 800m, 1,500m and mile. Coe retired from the sport in 1990 and served as a Member of Parliament from 1992 to 1997. He was elevated to the House of Lords in 2000. |
