Gebrselassie heads for Sheffield
Gebrselassie will seek Worlds qualification in Sheffield
Olympic legend Haile Gebrselassie will attempt to secure his World Championship place at the Norwich Union Classic in Sheffield next month.
The 29-year-old Ethiopian must qualify for the 2003 event after finishing a surprise third in the 10,000m at the last World Championships in Edmonton. Gebrselassie's growing marathon commitments mean he will have just one chance to run the necessary time this year. And he has chosen the meeting at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium on 30 June for his lone race over the Championship distance.
In order to qualify he must complete the 25 laps in a time of 27 minutes 49 seconds. His world record, set in 1998, stands at 26:22.75. "I don't have a wild card for the World Championships like before so the 10,000 metres in Sheffield is a very important race for me," said the four times world and twice Olympic gold medallist. Gebrselassie, who finished third in the London marathon in April on his debut at the distance, will attempt to set a new one hour world best in Hengelo, Netherlands on 2 June. Mexico's Arturo Barrios currently holds the record, running 21,101 metres in 60 minutes in 1991. |
