Jon Drummond leaves the track after the first round of the 4x100 metre relay

Jon Drummond, who was arrested earlier this year for transporting illegal drugs, has had his hearing scheduled for 22 January, according to the Associated Press news agency.

The Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter was released on $20,000 bail after he was apprehended in October at the Los Angeles International Airport.

Authorities alleged Drummond was carrying 3.15kg of marijuana in a backpack.

Defence lawyer Victor Sherman said the athlete had no idea what was inside the backpack when he picked it up.

Drummond, who made a brief court appearance on Wednesday, was a member of the US 4x100m relay that won gold at the Sydney Games.

The team attracted criticism for their over-exhuberant post-victory celebrations.
