Greene still keen for success

Olympic 100m champion and world record holder Maurice has announced his desire to become the sprinter of all time.

With his Sydney triumph behind him and the chance of a third straight world title looming in August, the American has his sights set on the record books.

"I want to be known as the greatest 100m sprinter ever," said Greene ahead of the Prefontaine Classic IAAF Grand Prix meeting in Oregon on Sunday.

"I have to keep pushing the limit of our sport - make our sport progress."

Greene acknowledges he has some distance to go before claiming the status of the greatest ever.

"You have to (it is) say Carl Lewis," Greene said. "Carl Lewis had done a lot of great things for our sport."

"He took our sport to a certain level, now it's time for somebody to take it to another level. I want that person to be me."

Comfortable win

At his only indoor meeting this year, Greene matched his own 60m indoor world record of 6.39sec on the way to victory at UK Indoor Championships.

Two weeks ago in Oasaka, Green comfortably won the 100m at the Japan Grand Prix in 9.96sec.

Although he failed to come close to his own world record of 9.79sec, Greene says he believes an improvement on the mark is within his grasp.

"I believe I'm on the right track to break my world record," he said.

Greene's current record, his world 100m titles and Olympic gold, give him an undisputed claim to the title of world's fastest man - for now.

But as Greene himself is well aware there is some stiff competition ahead, not least at the World Championships in Edmonton, Canada.

"You have a lot of good 100m runners out there, and on any day, anything can happen."
