Britain's Nicky Hunt takes World Cup archery gold

Hunt has now qualified for the World Cup Grand Final in Edinburgh

British archer Nicky Hunt took gold in the women's individual compound at the FITA World Cup tournament in Shanghai.

Hunt beat Mexico's Linda Ochoa in the final, but needed a one arrow shoot-off, after their match ended 5-5.

It is Hunt's first World Cup gold of the year and comes after silver medals in the events at Porec and Antalya.

It means she qualifies top for the World Cup Grand Final later this month and also secures a place in Edinburgh for fellow Briton Andrea Gales.

Gales qualifies as Britain's second highest placed archer in the overall standings, having scored points at both Porec and Antalya.

It will be Hunt's second successive appearance in the World Cup Grand Final [taking place on 18 and 19 September], following her fourth-place finish in last year's event in Copenhagen.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to win the gold," said Hunt. "It was tense in the end, and I let Linda back into it from a position of strength, but I will now head to Edinburgh in a confident mood, and it also sets me up well for the Commonwealth Games [in Delhi] next month."

Hunt also picked up a bronze medal alongside Nichola Simpson and Danielle Brown, the Paralympic champion, in the women's compound team event, beating Iran to third place.

Trailling by a point at the halfway stage, the British trio hit nine 10s with their last 12 arrows to win 227-222.

In the corresponding men's event, Chris White, Liam Grimwood and Duncan Busby claimed silver, losing 233-231 to Australia in the final.

Simon Terry, who claimed silver at last year's Grand Final, has already qualified automatically for Edinburgh, meaning one other British archer will also feature in the men's recurve event.

There will also be one place for Britain in the women's recurve and men's compound, with the identity of the archers to be confirmed over the weekend.
