Roger Federer beats Novak Djokovic to take Basle title

Roger Federer beat world number three Novak Djokovic of Serbia 6-4 3-6 6-1 to win the Swiss Indoors, avenging his defeat by the same opponent in 2009.

Contesting his eighth final of 2010, Federer rallied after losing the second set, running away with the third to take victory in one hour, 55 minutes.

Djokovic ended Swiss Federer's run of three straight Basle titles last year.

Federer has now won four titles this season, the last two back to back in Stockholm and in his hometown of Basle.

"It is even more special to win again at home," said Federer. "I had a super week and a tough final to play.

"It's always tough to play Novak. We've met so many times and he knows my game and how to beat me. He had a great week here."

Federer won the first set in 45 minutes but lost the second after losing his serve in the second game.

In the decider, the world number two broke in the fourth and sixth games before sealing the win with a backhand winner.

The Swiss improved his head to head series with Djokovic to 12-6 after earning wins in three of their four meetings this season.

Federer's 65th career title puts him alone on fourth in the all-time list, one better than Pete Sampras.

"I had a good week overall - if a bit of a poor third set," Djokovic reflected. "I lost a bit of focus and there was suddenly no way back from 5-1 down. You don't get many chances against Roger when he's on top of you."

Elsewhere, David Ferrer beat fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers 7-5 6-3 to win the Valencia Open crown.

The victory boosts Ferrer's chances of sealing a place at the ATP World Tour finals later in November.

Federer, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Robin Soderling have all qualified for the event.

Ferrer is competing with Tomas Berdych, Andy Roddick, Fernando Verdasco, Mikhail Youzhny and Juergen Melzer for one of the three remaining berths, with more ranking points available at next week's Paris Masters event.
