World sport cancellations

BBC Sport Online lists those sporting events across the world called off in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in America.

Sporting events called off:

  • 2001 Ryder Cup called off and tentatively rescheduled with same teams and players for September 2002, again at The Belfry.

  • All Champions League and Uefa Cup games (Uefa Cup ties now on 20 September, Champions League 10 October)

  • Davis Cup tie between USA and India (now being played 12-14 October)

  • World Golf Championships in St Louis, US PGA's Tampa Bay Classic and Monte Carlo Invitational seniors tournament, LPGA Tour Safeway Classic

  • NFL weekend games

  • Pakistan's Test series against New Zealand

  • Saturday's boxing match between Puerto Rico's Felix Trinidad and American Bernard Hopkins

  • Major League baseball games postponed, but due to resume on Monday

  • Sheffield Steelers ice hockey matches at Nottingham on Saturday and at home to Bracknell on Sunday

  • Major League Soccer in America

  • US Open Squash Championships

  • The World Canoe/Kayak Championships scheduled to be held in Tennessee

  • The International Wrestling Federation world championships in New York (26-29 September)


There are also doubts about many other sporting events due to take place over the coming days. Here is a round-up of how they have been affected.

  • Football
    Fifa has decided that this weekend's Asian qualifiers for the World Cup finals will take place as planned "providing that the safety of everyone involved can be guaranteed".

    The matches are Oman v United Arab Emirates and Iran v Bahrain on Friday, plus China v Uzbekistan and Thailand v Saudi Arabia on Saturday.

    Saturday's English Premiership fixtures will go ahead as planned.

  • Golf
    The world's top golfer Tiger Woods has pulled out of the Lancome Trophy in France, which starts the weekend before the Ryder Cup.

  • Tennis
    Great Britain's Davis Cup tie away to Ecuador will go ahead as planned next week following discussions between the national associations and the International Tennis Federation.

    Play at the women's Big Island championships in Waikoloa in Hawaii was postponed on Tuesday but has subsequently continued.

    Play at the Romanian Open has been called off on Friday in respect of the day of mourning. Play is expected to resume on Saturday.

    A decision is yet to be made regarding next week's tournament in Quebec City, Canada.

    Meanwhile, organisers of the Toyota Princess Cup are unsure whether American superstars Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati will appear as scheduled.

  • Motor racing
    Sunday's Italian F1 Grand Prix is to go ahead.

    The following GP in Indianapolis is also scheduled to take place as planned on 30 September.

    The German 500 Cart race in Dresden will also take place as scheduled.

    Nascar testing was suspended on Tuesday at the new Kansas Speedway and a decision is expected on whether the weekend's New Hampshire 300 will go ahead.

  • American sport
    Major League Baseball postponed its programme for a third day, scrapping Thursday's planned games.

    MLB commissioner Bud Selig said: "Major League Baseball remains very sensitive to the after-effects of the terrible tragedy that has struck our nation."

    Play-off matches in the minor leagues have been delayed and MLB post-season could be affected, but at present no date has been set for a resumption.

    Four of the Major League Soccer matches on Wednesday have been postponed.

    Several major college football games scheduled for Saturday have been postponed, while heads of the college football conferences are meeting to decide whether to postpone all weekend fixtures.

    Pre-season games in the National Hockey League have also been postponed.

  • Horse racing
    British racing is going ahead as planned, including the St Leger meeting at Doncaster.

    No plans have been made to postpone or abandon the Breeders' Cup meeting, scheduled for Belmont Park, New York, on 27 October.

  • Winter Olympics
    Olympic chief Jacques Rogge will next week discuss with Mitt Romney, president of the Salt Lake City organising committee, security measures for next year's Winter Olympics.

    Meanwhile, Greek officials are reviewing their $600m security plan for the 2004 Olympic Games.

  • 2004 Olympics

    Olympics chief Gianna Angelopoulos has stated that security for the games scheduled for Athens in 2004 will be fully reviewed.
