Honour list saddens Davies

President of UK Athletics and former Olympic champion Lynn Davies says he is disappointed that no Welsh sportspeople made the New Year Honours list.

"It's disappointing when you consider the great contribution Wales has made to British and world sport," Davies told BBC Sport Wales.

"Look at the achievements of Nicole Cooke, Joe Calzaghe and world snooker champion Mark Williams."

Davies himself received an MBE after taking long-jump gold in Tokyo in 1964.

Despite the new year-snub, Davies is confident that 2004 will be a successful time for Welsh sport.

(Nicole Cooke's) mind is going to be very much focused on Athens

"In athletics we have the likes of Darren Campbell, Tim Benjamin, Hayley Tullett and Christian Malcolm," said Davies.

"In the long term the future looks brilliant, with fantastic facilities in Wales and the current stars rubbing shoulders with emerging talent like hurdler Rhys Williams, pole vaulter Sonia Lawrence and sprinter Andrew Watkins."

Davies has especially high hopes for cyclist Nicole Cooke at the Athens Olympics in August.

"Nothing I can say about Nicole does justice to her achievements," said Davies.

"She's a tough competitor and is gaining in confidence every year, and her mind is going to be very much focused on Athens.

"She can certainly make the final and has every chance of a medal."
