Davenport at Bangor

Former England and Manchester United forward Peter Davenport is the new manager at Bangor City.

Mark Lloyd Williams becomes assistant player-manager.

Bangor secretary Alun Griffiths made the announcements on Thursday evening.

"Peter was the only one out of all the applicants who impressed us with his CV and the clubs he'd played for," Griffiths said.

"He thinks there is plenty of opportunity locally and hopefully he will bring some players with him," Griffiths added.

The appointment of Davenport is an ambitious step by Bangor and Griffiths had clear aims as to where the new manager would take them.

"We want to start to build the side up to be one of the the number one clubs in Wales," he said.

Davenport had been the front runner for the job.

Meirion Appleton, Bangor's manager for the past two seasons, has agreed to step down to develop the club's expanding youth academy.

Although Appleton led the club to Welsh Cup glory last season, results in the League of Wales have been disappointing.

This season, Bangor were in danger of relegation until a late run moved them up the table to 14th place.

Davenport was sacked by former club Macclesfield in December last year after he refused to work alongside newly-appointed joint manager Gil Prescott.

Before turning to management, Davenport played for the likes of Nottingham Forest, Manchester United, Middlesbrough and Sunderland.

He joined Macclesfield as player/coach in 1997.
