Murray managed to win his opening match in under two hours

By Andy Murray
World number four and British number one

It was quite an uncomfortable start to my US Open because it was very hot on Arthur Ashe Stadium, but the result was good and so was the time spent on court.

I think it was actually tougher when we were warming up beforehand on the outside courts because it does get quite breezy on the Stadium court in particular, which helps cool you down a little bit.

I didn't know much about Lukas Lacko, and so bearing that in mind as well as the conditions, I think I dealt with it all OK. I was happy to come through in straight sets and I served well.

Obviously, Tomas Berdych went out today and while it's always surprising to see one of the top seeds go out he did lose to a very, very good player. I actually played Michael Llodra on that court a few years ago and had a really tough four-set match with him.

I had a chat with Roger today for five or 10 minutes - we talked about his outfits

Playing your first match on day three is not the best position to be in - I think it's better to play on the Monday and hopefully have seven matches in 14 days rather than seven in 12.

Having said that, I had quite a busy week beforehand so in some ways it was nice. In these conditions it's certainly more important to be well prepared.

The last couple of days waiting for my match were actually a bit dull and I've been itching to get started, but transfer deadline day definitely helped. Everyone in my Fantasy League has been studying all the incoming transfers to see if there are any bargains out there to be had.

Alexander Hleb is priced at £5m, which looks decent value to me, and there's Rafael Van der Vaart at Tottenham too, another top player. Not sure on his price yet though or where I'd put him in my team but can't wait to see him in the Premier League, he'll be a top buy.

I've also been pretty happy with my football tennis so far this week. This is the game we play prior to training to loosen up, and I haven't lost any matches or had to do any forfeits as yet, which is more than I can say for Jez, my fitness trainer - he definitely needs to up his game out here in New York!

I've been in the dreaded ice bath a few times this week too. While it's pretty horrendous sitting in icy water for 10 minutes, it's a great way for my muscles to recover. The heat has been pretty brutal here so far this week, so while I don't look forward to the ice bath, I know it will help me in preparing for my next match.

Having a late start has meant I've had more time to catch up with some of the other players and I had a chat with Roger today. We talked about his outfits because he was wearing a different kit today to the one he wore the other night - apparently he's got the New York skyline on his shoes.

Hopefully, I'll get the chance to play a night match at some stage but for now I'm concentrating on the next round and Dustin Brown.

You don't come up against serve-volleyers that often but it's something I enjoy, I normally play pretty well against them, so I'm really looking forward to it. Round two here we come.
