Kleybanova overpowers Ivanovic

Jelena Jankovic reached the French Open third round with a battling 6-2 3-6 6-4 win over qualifier Kaia Kanepi.

After cruising in the first set, the fourth-seeded Serb lost her way to the Estonian and dropped the second set after being broken in the eighth game.

Jankovic, twice a semi-finalist at Roland Garros, eventually broke in the 10th game of the decider to win.

Eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska lost to Yaroslava Shvedova and former champion Ana Ivanovic lost to Alisa Kleybanova.

Ivanovic, the 2008 champion, suffered a 6-3 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Russian 28th seed.

The former world number one has fallen to 42 in the rankings, and has not got past the fourth round of a Grand Slam since lifting the title at Roland Garros two years ago.

But despite an error-strewn performance, the Serb, who is now working with Steffi Graf's former coach Heinz Gunthardt, said: "It's going very well, I'm really happy.

"Heinz is a great coach. We started in February, improvements in my game have been really big and very visible.

"Everything is going well. I'm really happy with the improvements we made and the things we want to work on."

She added: "It was just very hard today, because, many important points, she played really, really well.

"I didn't think I did too much wrong out there. I was also a little bit unlucky with so many line calls on my serve and just everything going out."

World number 36 Shvedova came through 7-5 6-3 against Poland's Radwanska, who reached the fourth round in 2008 and 2009.

Fifth seed Elena Dementieva defeated Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 7-6 (7-3) to book a fourth-round meeting with Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak.

However, bad light once again forced play to be abandoned with several matches still to reach their conclusions.

I was also a little bit unlucky with so many line calls on my serve and just everything going out.

Four-time Roland Garros winner and 22nd seed Justine Henin was 6-3 2-3 up against Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 12th seed Maria Sharapova was 6-3 2-2 ahead against Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens while France's 13th seed Marion Bartoli was 5-4 down on serve in the first set against compatriot Olivia Sanchez.
