Liverpool doubles player Ken Skupski has spoken out in support of under-fire Davis Cup captain John Lloyd.

Lloyd has been subjected to a torrent of criticism since Great Britain were beaten in their Euro-Africa Zone Group Two tie in Lithuania.

Skupski, who won his tie with partner Colin Fleming in Vilnius, told BBC Radio Merseyside: "John isn't coaching the players.

"He's the captain for a short period of time, three or four times a year."

He continued: "So I wouldn't necessarily say everything needs to be based around how John is doing, it needs to be the bigger picture over the course of the year."

Great Britain's trip to Lithuania saw Skupski included in a Davis Cup squad for the second time and saw him play competitive tennis for his country for the first time.

While the 26-year-old was disappointed to be part of the squad that sank to a record fifth loss in a row he found the experience beneficial on a personal level.

"It was fantastic," enthused Skupski, "We played well (and) we really got the job done.

"We managed to win but unfortunately the result overall wasn't going to go our way and we face Turkey in July."
