Marion Bartoli
Bartoli lost 11 games in a row as the fierce heat took its toll

The headline in the Melbourne Herald Sun as "the worst heatwave in a century" is predicted.

"It was quite, quite hot. I have to say it was definitely some tough condition. I don't think it's really fair to have one quarter-final played at 1pm, right in the middle of the heat, and one playing at 7.30pm. But I guess that's the way it is."
Marion Bartoli is the latest player to suffer as temperatures soar in Melbourne.

"To be honest, from watching the news and everything yesterday, I thought it might be a little bit worse out there."
Superman Andy Roddick isn't bothered by a bit of sun.

"I did finish very late, about 2, 2.30, 3am two nights ago. Went to sleep around 5, 5.30am. Didn't really have time to recover. There were really difficult circumstances. Conditions were extreme today. It did affect more on me than him. But that was the situation. I just have to cope with it. I did request to play night match, but didn't came up good for me."
Novak Djokovic after retiring from his quarter-final against Roddick.

"Yeah, I feel better now. I want to get on the court again."
A touch too late, Djokovic is ready to go again.

"Noncombustible? I love you English dudes."
A bemused Roddick is asked about his "noncombustible" attitude.

"I'm 26 years old. What the hell else am I going to do with myself? Let's be honest. That's obviously the motivation behind it."
Roddick again, this time on his motivation.

"That's extremely coincidental. Beyond that, I don't know what I got for you. I mean, if I ever play lotto, I'll be sure to bet on odd numbers."
Guess who? Roddick is asked if he has any thoughts on reaching the Aussie Open semi-finals in 2003, '05, '07 and '09.

"You have to ask Roger what happened. I couldn't do nothing in the match. He played like the world number one."
Juan Martin del Potro is at a loss to explain his crushing defeat by world number two Roger Federer in the quarter-finals.

"I don't think Juan Martin was at his very best, otherwise it would have been much closer.
Roger, being Roger, has more of an idea what went wrong.

"I thought it was going to be a tough match in the beginning. We had some tough rallies. I was very mistaken. I'm happy about that."
Although even Federer is wrong sometimes.

"You go out there and you run and you hope you're going to hit it in the corner basically. There's no real secret. Just hard practice and a lot of talent. Being mentally there when it really counts."
Federer reveals the secret to being one of the greatest players the world has seen.

"I think a little bit. I might come here and watch a little bit."
Vera Zvonareva is asked if she will check out her next opponent by watching Jelena Dokic take on Dinara Safina.

"I'm sorry I had to defeat your Australian. I hope you will be behind me next time."
Safina seeks to win over the crowd after ending the spirited run of the crowd favourite.

"When it's all over, we'll go and drink a little beer together."
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga makes plans with fellow French quarter-finalist Gilles Simon.

"I saw something that he said in the press conference, they asked him about my match and he said I should use the forehand and try to move him and try to dictate the rhythm of the match. I saw it, so I didn't need to speak with him!"
Fernando Verdasco explains how Rafael Nadal unwittingly helped him beat Andy Murray.
