Safina powers to Pan Pacific win

Dinara Safina
Safina captured her fourth WTA TOur title

Russian Dinara Safina overpowered her compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova to win the Pan Pacific Open 6-1 6-3.

The fourth seed came out with all guns blazing in Ariake, Japan, and quickly broke to go 3-1 up in the first set before closing it out with an ace.

A third break in the second set sealed the victory as Kuznetsova's forehand volley went wide.

The title is Safina's fourth of the year and she is now poised to climb to a career-high third in the world.

"God knows how far I can get," said the French Open runner-up and US Open semi-finalist.

"I've played the best tennis I've ever played this week.

"I knew I still had so much more inside. It suddenly clicked in my mind."

Despite her disappointing performance Kuznetsova praised her opponent and said Safina has what it takes to reach the top.

"Dinara played unbelievably well today," said the former US Open champion.

"She was the favourite to win and she did it. She definitely has what it takes to be number one."

Meanwhile, world number nine Vera Zvonareva came from a set down to deny Peng Shuai her first WTA title on Sunday, beating the Chinese star 6-7 (4/7) 6-0 6-2 to claim the Guangzhou Open.

It was the Russian's seventh career title and second of the year, after winning at Prague in May.

Victory capped a remarkable month for Zvonareva, who won singles bronze at the Olympics in August and followed it up by helping Russia claim the Fed Cup title.
