Safina v S Williams as it happened
French Open

Fourth round result:

2-6 3-6

By Sophie Brown

Second set

Safina 3-6 Williams
Williams slashes a backhand return down the line to earn two match points and clinches victory when Safina finds the net with a backhand.

Safina 3-5 Williams
Williams has the bit between her teeth now - she holds and is just one game away from victory.

Safina 3-4 Williams
The sixth break in seven games as Williams again moves ahead after blasting through Safina's service game. "C'mon!" yells Serena as a place in the last eight is beckoning.

Safina 3-3 Williams
Some brilliant and bravely committed tennis from Safina sees her break Williams to love. There are some long, tiring rallies going on out there under the hot Parisian sun.

Safina 2-3 Williams
The women are ratcheting up the effort now, both grunting like, well, tennis players. But it's Serena who comes out on top in this game, breaking the 21-year-old to edge ahead in the set.

Safina 2-2 Williams
It's a different match now as Safina earns another chance to break. But Williams doesn't panic and manages to save herself, leaving her opponent to mutter angrily in Russian at the other end of the court.

Safina 2-1 Williams
Safina's service action is bit like Lindsay Davenport - it's a slow wind-up but she gets a lot of heavy power behind the ball. In fact, with her tall frame and scraped-back ponytail, she looks a bit like Davenport. Whatever, this is her best game on serve and she's ahead in the set.

Safina 1-1 Williams
The spectators have presumably finished their coffee and croissants now and the stadium is filling up. They try to rouse Safina as she earns two break points. The Russian pumps her fist as she rams a backhand winner down the line to break for the first time.

Safina 0-1 Williams
The Russian needs a good start to this second set but a couple of double faults put a stop to that. Serena takes the opening game. Time to start anticipating a mouth-watering Williams v Henin quarter-final perhaps?

First set

Safina 2-6 Williams
Two more set points for Williams. Safina saves both with rasping returns, the second of which leaves Serena sprawling on the clay. It looks like she may have turned her ankle but she gets up straight away and secures the first set.

Safina 2-5 Williams
Serena zaps a backhand return past Safina to earn two set points but then hits a couple of wild shots, allowing Safina to hold.

Safina 1-5 Williams
There's a glimpse of hope for Safina when she goes 0-30 up on Serena's serve. But the 25-year-old American just bangs down a couple of unreturnable serves as she wins the next four points to hold.

Safina 1-4 Williams
A terrible drop-shot from Safina provokes her into an angry rant in Russian. Seems to do the trick though as she ends the game with two aggressive points - one an ace - and holds for the first time in the match.

Safina 0-4 Williams
Another game, another cruise for former champion Williams. Maybe the crowd can get behind Safina - actually, that might be a tall order given there are only about six people who are currently watching this match in the Phillippe Chatrier arena.

Safina 0-3 Williams
I may have spoken too soon about Safina losing her nerves - an edgy double fault puts her serve at risk again and Serena takes full advantage.

Safina 0-2 Williams
Serena drops just one point on serve but Safina does at least look less nervous than in her opening game.

Safina 0-1 Williams
It's a disastrous start for Safina, who is broken on her opening serve. She is matching Serena in the fashion stakes - both women are in luminous pink - but already she is struggling to match the power of the American's groundstrokes.
