Mauresmo wins on Berlin comeback
Amelie Mauresmo
Mauresmo won her match in one hour 23 minutes
Amelie Mauresmo returned from two months on the sidelines with a relatively comfortable 6-3 6-3 win over China's Zi Yan at the Berlin Open.

The world number three, who had surgery to remove her appendix, now faces Julia Vakulenko in the third round.

World number one Justine Henin continued her smooth build-up to the French Open with a straight-sets win over Tatjana Malek in Berlin.

The Belgian beat 19-year-old German wildcard Malek 6-1 6-1.

Mauresmo was pleased to return to court but still thinks her game needs improving before she is back to her best.

I'm not 100% ready to come back, but I don't want to wait longer

Martina Hingis

"I was quite impatient to get out on the court," she said. "There were some good things and bad things which need working on.

"I was only really able to serve about ten days ago and that side of my game was weak."

Fourth seed Martina Hingis battled past Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-5 7-6 (9-7) in her first match for six weeks.

"I didn't want to go three sets," said Hingis. "I'm not 100% ready to come back, but I don't want to wait longer."

Henin had more trouble with the rain-soaked courts soaked than Malek, and the German admitted: "I had no idea she played that fast.

"I was too nervous - I'd never seen her before except on television."

Defending champion and seventh seed Nadia Petrova beat France's Severine Bremond 6-3 6-2.

The Russian will next meet compatriot Elena Dementieva, who defeated Meghann Shaughnessy 5-7 6-3 6-1.
