Britain to face tough Croatia tie
Jamie and Andy Murray
The Murray brothers are likely to play for GB in September
Great Britain have been handed a home tie against 2005 Davis Cup winners Croatia in the World Group play-offs.

John Lloyd's team reached the play-offs with a 4-1 win over the Netherlands during which Greg Rusedski retired.

World number eight Ivan Ljubicic may have played his last Davis Cup match but Croatia still have number 13 Mario Ancic and Ivo Karlovic in their team.

The winners of the eight play-off games from 21-23 September will go through to the competition's top tier.

If we get into the World Group we'll have to play teams like Croatia anyway

John Lloyd

Team captain Lloyd said the possible absence of Ljubicic would give Andy Murray and Tim Henman a much better chance.

"After his last Davis Cup match Ljubicic announced his retirement - we don't know what to make of that yet, but if he keeps to that it gives a slightly different perspective.

"They still have good players but if a guy who is in the top 10 in the world is missing it is a different matter.

"Even so, I'd back our guys against anyone."

Lloyd also said coming to Britain would be awkward for Croatia.

"I'm taking the view that if you get a home draw to get back into the World Group it's a good draw.

"Looking from the perspective of Croatia I don't think they would be too happy with their draw - Great Britain away.

"If we get into the World Group we'll have to play teams like Croatia anyway and, yes, maybe it's a year early, but we're going to be ready."

Second seeds Australia have been drawn away against Serbia, Austria play Brazil and Peru host Belarus.

Chile must travel to Israel, the Czech Republic take on Switzerland, Romania go to Japan and third seeds Slovakia meet Korea.
