O'Brien loss ends GB women's run
By Sarah Holt at Wimbledon

Katie O'Brien accepts defeat at Wimbledon
O'Brien reached the second round for the first time in four attempts
British number one Katie O'Brien's Wimbledon hopes came to a crashing halt with a 6-0 6-1 defeat at the hands of Dutch 31st seed Michaella Krajicek.

O'Brien, who was the only British woman to reach the second round, could not cope with Krajicek's powerful play.

Krajicek, half-sister of 1996 winner Richard Krajicek, broke her three times to take the first set in 25 minutes.

There were cheers when O'Brien, 21, won her first game in the second but it was her last as Krajicek strode to victory.

I wanted to prove myself but I think I beat myself

"I'm disappointed because I didn't feel I did myself justice," O'Brien said. "It was hard to lose my serve early on and it was an uphill struggle from there on.

"It was a reality check out there. She is a step up in class and maybe I was overwhelmed

"I wanted to prove myself but I think I beat myself because I made too many errors and my serve let me down."

The crowd on Court Three had given O'Brien a half-hearted reception, however, the Yorkshire player had started well, using some good lashing forehands to take two points off Krajicek in the opening game.

But the Briton conceded the break in the very next game with a double-fault and it was mistakes that proved her undoing.

O'Brien battled gamely in the final three games but a total of 29 unforced errors told the story of the match.

The 21-year-old expects to see her world ranking rise to 120 following her Wimbledon run and now hopes to qualify for the US Open by competing in America.

"At least I'm moving in the right direction and hopefully I can get in the top 100 sooner rather than later," she added.
