Henman makes no mistake wrapping up victory with an impressive performance on his first match point. He will now meet 14th seed David Ferrer of Spain in the second round on Tuesday but Henman will be full of confidence after this win.

Henman tries to wrap up the win but Verdasco makes him wait a little long before he can celebrate.

Henman is edging closer to victory with another impressive service game and the dejected look on Verdasco's face seems to signal that the game is almost up for the Spaniard.

Verdasco is not going to give up without a fight but although he manages to hold his own serve, he is running out of opportunities to break Henman.

Henman gets the chance to shine on his own serve again and his play at the net is superb with a couple of well-placed volleys to edge him closer to victory.

After the disappointment of the previous game, Verdasco is finally rewarded for his efforts with a good service game to finally get on the scoreboard in the set.

A wobble by Henman when it looks like he is in control and Verdasco has two break points. But Henman serves and volleys to save the first and then sends down an ace that Verdasco cannot do anything with to save the second. But Verdasco is not done yet - forcing another two break points but Henman's serving saves him and he will be very relieved to have got through that test.

Verdasco is on the back front and loses the first two points of the game and things are not looking good. He wins the next point but Henman dominates the next point with an overhead to make it 40-15. Verdasco sends the ball long to lose the game and he needs to recover quickly.

Henman is full of confidence after the break which won him the set and it is a solid service game as he tries to silence the crowd and the pressure is definitely on Verdasco.

First set

Henman 7-5 Verdasco
Henman puts the pressure on his opponent and wins the first two points. With the tension rising Henman opens up the court with an angled backhand and volleys to make it 0-40. Verdasco saves two but Henman sends a shot right onto Verdasco and the Spaniard's effort back is long to give Henman the set.

Henman 6-5 Verdasco
The opening love game of the match goes to Henman who is in control on his own serve. Can he break Verdasco or will the first tight set go to a tiebreak?

Henman 5-5 Verdasco
A good approach shot by Henman keeps the pressure on the Spaniard but the Briton follows that up with a couple of errors to hand the game to Verdasco. Henman will be disappointed he can't maintain his momentum from the last game.

Henman 5-4 Verdasco
A Henman mistake on the volley and an outstanding return put Verdasco 30-15 up and there are danger signs for the Briton. Verdasco earns the match's first break point but Henman saves it with a confident serve and forces Verdasco into rushing his shot and then seals the game with another ace.

Henman 4-4 Verdasco
Verdasco has no problems on his serve this time sealing the game with a powerful forehand winner, followed by an ace on the next point.

Henman 4-3 Verdasco
As in the first game, Henman loses the first two points but recovers the situation once more thanks to a couple of mistakes from Verdasco.

Henman 3-3 Verdasco
A couple of good rallies and Henman gets to 30-15 on his opponent's serve as he makes Verdasco work hard. But Verdasco eventually gets through thanks to a couple of big forehands.

Henman 3-2 Verdasco
No problems again for Henman on his own serve and he holds comfortably to edge ahead once more in the set.

Henman 2-2 Verdasco
The Briton is struggling a little on the backhand side which Verdasco is trying to exploit but it is a forehand which hits the frame of Henman's racket and goes well long which gives the game to Verdasco.

Henman 2-1 Verdasco
Henman is looking confident on his own serve and sends down three aces to easily win the game.

Henman 1-1 Verdasco
Henman loses the first point of the game but makes a successful challenge to the line call. But he loses the replayed point and Verdasco goes on to hold.

Henman 1-0 Verdasco
Henman makes a less than impressive start, losing the first two points against the home favourite but the British number two is soon into his stride.

1855: Tim Henman is bidding to do what compatriot Andy Murray did earlier and advance to the second round in Madrid. It is the opening match on the first evening session at the Madrid Arena and players are warming up.
