Injured Rusedski out of Cup clash
Greg Rusedski
Rusedski lost in the first round at Wimbledon
British number one Greg Rusedski has pulled out of Great Britain's Davis Cup tie with Israel later this month after failing to recover from a hip injury.

The 32-year-old picked up a small labral tear in his right hip before the Stella Artois Championships and could be out of action for up to six weeks.

"I'm really disappointed not to be able to play in this tie," he said.

"I had been hopeful of recovering. However, after further examinations I had to accept my consultant's advice."

GB captain Jeremy Bates must now rely on Andy Murray to lead the team in a tie they must win to avoid a Euro-Africa Zone One relegation play-off in September.

Britain will also be without doubles specialist James Auckland, who is getting married that weekend.

Alex Bogdanovic and Arvind Parmar, neither of whom has won a live Davis Cup match, could be called into action.

Rusedski withdrew from the Stella Artois Championships during his first-round clash with Frenchman Antony Dupuis and then lost to Marat Safin in the first round at Wimbledon.

We wish Greg all the best in his recovery

GB Davis Cup captain Jeremy Bates

"I haven't made any decision on my future yet," said Rusedski after his Wimbledon exit.

"I'd be silly to make a rash decision this very moment.

"It's trying to find the motivation day in, day out. I think that's the hardest thing, the older you get, always having to fight back.

"You have to look and see how much you want to come back and how much you have left in the tank, because you can only do it so many times in your life."

Britain take on Israel at Eastbourne's Devonshire Park from July 21-23.

"We wish Greg all the best in his recovery and hope to see him back on the circuit soon," said Bates.
