Andre Agassi beat Scotland's Jamie Baker 6-4 6-4 in the opening match of the Boodles Challenge at Stoke Park.
The 36-year-old American, who lost to Tim Henman in round one at Queen's last week, was pleased to record a win at the Buckinghamshire venue.
"The tournament is ideal preparation for Wimbledon as you are guaranteed three games on grass," said Agassi, who skipped the clay court season.
"The court was playing real good and I was seeing the ball well."
Mikhail Youzhny caused the first upset of the tournament by beating defending champion Fernando Gonzalez 7-6 6-3.
