Struggling Safin falls to Hrbaty
Marat Safin
Australian Open champion Marat Safin suffered another shock defeat on a day of surprises at the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami on Sunday.

Safin, who has won just one Tour match since his Australian triumph, was beaten 7-6 6-1 by Dominik Hrbaty.

The opening set was a tight affair, with 26th seed Hrbaty shading it 8-6, before Safin completely lost his way.

Fifth seed Carlos Moya, eighth seed David Nalbandian and 12th seed Tommy Robredo also made third-round exits.

Thomas Johansson, conqueror of Greg Rusedski, saw off Moya 7-6 (8-6) 3-6 6-2, while David Ferrer beat Nalbandian 7-6 (9-7) 6-1.

Robredo pulled out of his clash with Jiri Novak with a shoulder injury.

Third seed Safin lost in the first round in Dubai last month and struggled past Jarkko Nieminen in the first round in Miami before falling to Hrbaty.

When I'm not feeling comfortable, he is feeling that, and he feels more confident

"I couldn't find my game," said Safin. "I know how to play against him. He's not going to come up with something incredible to play against me. He's going to stick to his game.

"It's me who has to be a little bit more creative and try to bring him in. I couldn't really make these shots to bring him in and change the rhythm.

"I couldn't find my game from the baseline, and that's where the trouble came. "When I'm not feeling comfortable, he is feeling that, and he feels more confident. He's secure, and he's going for the shots.

"That's why the second set he played much better. He felt it."

Hrbaty will next face French wildcard Gael Monfils, who beat South Korean Hyung-Taik Lee 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-6 (7-1).

Rafael Nadal, in-form Ivan Ljubicic and an improving Juan Carlos Ferrero also booked their places in the last 16.
