Ask Albert - Number 93
Ask Albert
Match of the Day's footballing sage Albert Sewell is poised to answer your queries on the beautiful game.

Fill in the form on the right-hand side of the page if you have a question.

Tommy, Scotland

How much did Arsenal pay for Robert Pires and from which club did they sign him?

Pires is in his third season at Highbury. He cost Arsenal 6m from Olympique Marseille in July 2000 and they are certainly pleased to have had him back in form and fitness since October after missing the climax to last season's double through a knee injury.

Jamie, Newcastle

Will there still be a transfer deadline in our domestic football in March, now that we are in the era of the transfer window?

Yes there will. While Premiership clubs cannot make signings between now and the end of the season, those in the Football League can continue to trade until the deadline on the fourth Thursday next.

Des, Cumbria

What is the function of football's G-14 group?

This is the body of leading European clubs that was formed to discuss important issues with Uefa and Fifa. It is still known as 'G-14 - The Voice of the Clubs' but has grown to 18 members.

They are Arsenal, Liverpool, Man Utd, AC Milan, Ajax, Barcelona, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Juventus, Olympic Lyon, Olympique Marseille, Paris St. Germain, Porto, PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid and Valencia.

Steve, Worcester

What are the dates of England's remaining matches in the 2004 European Championship qualifying round?

England's six remaining fixtures in Group seven are: 29 March v Liechtenstein (away); 2 April v Turkey (Sunderland); 11 June v Slovakia (Middlesbrough); 6 September v Macedonia (away); 10 September v Liechtenstein (home); 11 or 12 October v Turkey (away).

Chris, London

How long do you see Paul Gascoigne staying as a player-coach in China?

I'd be surprised if he is still with Chinese Division Two club Gansu Tianma beyond two or three months.

I'm worried about Gazza's long-term future...would like to think he will find a way of putting down some roots in England and get the chance to teach up-and-coming youngsters some of his great skills. Let's wish him good luck.

Tom, Australia

Where is John Lyall now?

John Lyall managed West Ham (the club he played for) from 1974-89 and took them to their last major honours, the FA Cup in 1975 and 1980. Then he managed Ipswich Town from 1990-94. Now 62, he is retired from football, with a farm in Suffolk.

Chris, UK

Has a goalkeeper ever scored in a World Cup match?

I can think of one. Mark Bosnich, when with Aston Villa, scored the last goal (a penalty) when Australia beat Solomon Islands 13-0 in a World Cup Oceania Group qualifier in Sydney on 11 June 1997.

Phil, Norway

Hi, Albert. I remember you well from when you edited the Chelsea programme in the 50s, 60s and 70s and wonder if you know whether they are any pre-World War Two Chelsea players still alive?

We are talking pre-1939 here...64 years and more ago. I really don't know if any Chelsea players of that era are still alive, and if anyone has any information, I'd be delighted to hear.

What I do know is that Roy Bentley, who captained Chelsea's only Championship-winning team in 1955, still gets to Stamford Bridge occasionally. He is 78 and lives in Reading.

Shane, UK

Which player appeared most times at Wembley?

An appropriate question just as the famous Twin Towers are demolished in preparation for the rebuilding of Wembley Stadium.

The answer is goalkeeper Peter Shilton. He played there 57 times (52 internationals for England, two League Cup finals, one FA Cup final, one Charity Shield match and once in a Football League XI).

Rob, Somerset

Who were the goalkeepers in the 1979 FA Cup final between Arsenal and Man Utd?

Pat Jennings for Arsenal and Gary Bailey for United. Arsenal won 3-2, their scorers Talbot, Stapleton and Sunderland...McQueen and McIlroy for United. Alan Sunderland shot the last-minute winner after United had rallied from two down to 2-2. One of Wembley's most dramatic finishes.

We have recently had many e-mails requesting an answer to the following question:

Who played in all the following derby matches? >

Liverpool v Everton, Real Madrid v Athletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund v Moenchengladbach, AC Milan v Inter Milan, Chelsea v Arsenal.

As far as we are informed, this is a trick question, with no right answer - but if anyone knows different, we'd be delighted to hear from you!

Andrew Carton in Ireland writes:

The question about the player who played in all the derbies is a spoof. It has been drivin' us mad over here, it was on the radio and all. It is not De lucas, like a lot of people thought.
