Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has been given an OBE in the New Year Honours.

The former Northern Ireland international has transformed the Glasgow side since he arrived in 2000.

Ice hockey star Tony Hand receives a MBE, while yachtswomen Emma Richards, who was brought up in Scotland, is also rewarded for her achievements.

Other Scots in the list are David Heddle, for services to disabled bowls in Fraserburgh, and William Collins, for tennis in Ayrshire.

O'Neill, 51, won the Treble in his first season at Celtic Park and the league title was defended successfully the following year.

Celtic finished empty-handed last season but it was a memorable ride.

The league was lost on goal difference to city rivals Rangers on a thrilling final day and Porto edged them out in extra time in the final of the Uefa Cup.

O'Neill made 64 international appearances, including games at the 1982 World Cup, and picked up a European Cup winner's medal while at Nottingham Forest.

Hand, 36, is player-coach at the Edinburgh Capitals and has won every domestic honour in British ice hockey - 13 in all.

Since making his debut for Murrayfield Racers as a 13-year-old, Hand has had an illustrious career - registering more than 3,000 points in all competitions.

He became the first British-trained player to be drafted in the US National Hockey League, being a 12th-round pick by Edmonton Oilers.

Richards, 28, finished fourth in the Around Alone solo round-the-world race in 2003.

She is the first woman and youngest competitor to finish the world's longest yacht race.

Richards , who grew up in Helensburgh but now lives in Hampshire, spent almost 180 days at sea on board her 60ft yacht Pindar to complete the 29,000 mile race.
