Italian side Benetton Treviso announced their arrival in the Magners League with a stunning win over the Scarlets at Stadio Comunale di Monigo.

The Scarlets led 22-9 at the break, but the home side stormed back to register an historic win.

Wing Tommaso Benvenuti scored the winning try four minutes from the end while scrum-half Tobias Botes played a starring role.

Scarlets debutant George North, 18, touched down twice.

But North's night and that of his team-mates came to a dire end as the hosts signalled their intentions for the season by making the visitors suffer.

The Scarlets rested experienced internationals Stephen Jones, Sean Lamont and new skipper Matthew Rees while rising stars Ken Owens, Tavis Knoyle and Jonathan Davies were on the bench - decisions that look questionable with hindsight

Number eight David Lyons (hamstring) was also absent with injury, but the Scarlets' pride was also subsequently dented.

Botes scored a try, two conversions and five penalties to capitalise on his side's pressure. His third-minute penalty opened the scoring and his extra points to Benvenuti's try were an appropriate end to his evening's work.

In between Scarlets fly-half Rhys Priestland ghosted through for their opening try and teenager North displayed the talent that has had boss Nigel Davies purring with admiration as he powered over for a first-half brace.

Priestland kicked two first-half conversions and a penalty while Chris Burton dropped a goal and Botes added a penalty to give the hosts hope.

The visitors had the advantage of Treviso being down to 14 men when North scored his second try, the hosts having lost number eight Manoa Vosawai to a yellow card two minutes earlier.

But that made little difference after the break as Treviso's hope hope turned into jubilation amid virtually one-way traffic.

Botes kicked a penalty, then went over for his try and centre Ezio Galon followed the scrum-half's example while Botes converted and kicked another penalty.

Priestland replied with two penalties to put the visitors back in front.

But four minutes from the end Treviso conjured a dramatic winner for Benvenuti that Botes sealed.
